Off-season US travel hotspots
Against the Flow
The USA's tourist hotspots are popular for a reason: they provide something unique in terms of culture, natural beauty, or atmosphere.
Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island's off-season temperatures of 70°F (21°C) in January and 82°F (28°C) in October are ideal. Another is the lack of tourists on the pale sand beaches.
Fredericksburg
Wine tasting is a great experience any time of year, but especially in the summer. Even in the dead of winter in German-settled Fredericksburg.
Tybee Island
Tybee, also known as Savannah's Beach, enjoys average January highs of 59°F (15°C). Even while it's not quite warm enough for a beach day, it's excellent for strolling.
VIETNAM
The US Virgin Islands — St Thomas, St Croix, and St John (shown) – are ideal off-season getaways. The islands' average highs range from 84°F (29°C) in January to 90°F (32°C) in the summer.
San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo, or SLO, is a pleasantly sunny town located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Finger Lakes
The wine area is a popular summer getaway for New Yorkers. But it's usually calmer on either side, with plenty of sunshine (and with the additional beauty of golden colours in fall).
